We spent time today introducing the concept of arc lengths and sector areas in circles. Both of these figures involve working with a fraction of a circle that is found by using the central angle and then comparing it to the entire 360 degrees of the circle. We did a few problems together before getting started on the homework problems.

Book Review: "My Walk of Faith"
Memoirs continue to sell and sell well because our lives always will make the best stories, one way or another, even when those lives are imaginary, as is Harry Potter's. Besides, they almost always have similar plot lines, and we like repetition, just like our kids. Time after time, memoirs show how so-and-so overcame this or that problem or series of, to become what they've become. The ugly ones--and they are legion--detail ugly lives. They too do well.
I just finished a short one from an older man whose first language is not English but Navajo. "My Walk of Faith," by Ernest Phillip Benally, is short, but not sweet, telling but not at all sordid, even though it includes it's share of ugliness. Benally grew up in a hogan, hearing only Navajo in a thoroughly Navajo cultural world.
His father had two wives, as did his grandfather. Bigamy was perfectly acceptable, he says, as it was in the Old Testament, a way of life and frequently practiced. As a child he never questioned it, just as he didn't question his father, who he says was rather painfully shy and, by his account, a good, good man, who happened to have two wives.
When Christianity came into Ernest Benally's life, some judgments had to be radically altered because the religion his parents practiced, as well as his father's bigamy, was, to the Christianity of the missionaries, perfectly unacceptable.
What the story of Ernest Benally's life does--even though it may not be the mission of the story--is help white folks like me understand how mission efforts were capable of not only turning people away from Christianity but even making them bitter. His readers have no reason to question the integrity of Ernest Benally's parents; they maintained moral values to their kids: stay away from alcohol, get a good education. They were, in every way, loving, caring people.
But those parents were, by Protestant standards back then, the heathen, a word that has little, if any, redeeming value. What white Christians asked the heathen to do was forsake a way of life that, whatever its religious character, was wrong or evil or sinful--and all those words scald the soul.
Benally's Navajo name is Naa't'tyil Haswood, which means, he says, "a leader came over the horizon." Perhaps his parents, who never did convert, understood better than they knew because their son's career, in the church and in profession of social work, shows himself very much a leader, a leader of his people.
Even here, in his story, he's leading the rest of us to learn more about being believers.
Ernest Benally’s “My Walk of Faith” is beautiful and telling in so many ways, especially for those who want to understand Native America in general and Native American Christians in particular. Honestly and courageously, Benally walks us through a life fraught with unintended prejudice, well- meant but so often demeaning, a story that ends, nonetheless, in commitment and faith. I’m thankful—all of us should be—for Ernest Benally, his life, his faith, and his story.

Morning Thanks--Strawberry sin
Out here in the northwest corner of Iowa, the guilty pleasures of sweet corn are simply a given. Sweet corn comes with the territory. Shouldn't be long now that summer solstice is behind us and days are already shrinking. Maybe a month, at best--or at worst. It'll be here. You can bet on it--sweet corn is like the dawn.
That it is doesn't mean people take sweet corn for granted. No way. We pay outrageous prices for first fruits. Really. Anticipation turns Silas Marners into spendthrifts. Some people claim sweet corn alone is reason enough to live here.
If the Tall Corn State were really wanted to market itself, we'd simply link all of our summer festivals at the hip and create a gargantuan state-wide Sweet Corn Fest, then invite the world. Seriously, if we'd build it, they'd come because where sweet corn is concerned, this isn't Iowa, it's heaven. Or something like that.
But strawberries are special grace. Only some summers get truly blessed. People grow strawberries, but as a garden crop they make untoward demands. Birds prey for 'em and on 'em, and basically laugh off scarecrows and whirlygigs. Strawberries don't like Iowa heat, and they're a whole lot more thirsty than a good crop of anything we grow out here should be. Truth be known, they're unbiblical--they prefer their foundations a little sandy. They're even a little snooty, turning up their red noses at our 20-thou-an acre black soil.
So when we get 'em out here on the edge of the plains, we lose all semblance of self-control.
Yesterday, a partly cloudy Monday morning, we picked way more than we needed, three whole flats of the roundest, reddest, juiciest berries folks around here can imagine. Hardly a dud in the bunch, and plenty of young'uns left on the plant to get rich and juicy tomorrow. In Wisconsin's lakeshore woods, where I grew up, strawberries grow wild in a perfect sandy homeland. Out here, they're far more rare. They're immigrants, so raking in a bumper crop is just about as great a shock as it is a blessing.
So we had fun--grandpa and grandma with the boys, out in the rows on a perfect day. My knees creak, so I went down on all fours early, crawling along between the rows. No matter. We never made it farther than fifty feet or so--that's how thick they were.
And when we got home, we partook of the bounty in shameful excess. We ate strawberries, we ate strawberry muffins, then we ate more strawberries. Last night I had strawberries on ice cream; this morning, strawberries on cereal. My wife promises more strawberry muffins and, she says, almost sexually, all sorts of questionable delights.
So this morning thanks are bright and red and juicy and sinfully sweet, and we got 'em in spades. This morning's thanks are for strawberries--so strange and sensual and wondrous we really don't deserve them.
Oh, the heck with it. Today, I'll cash in my Calvinist chips and join the Lutherans.

Sunday Morning Meds--Inheritance
“For evil men will be cut off,
but those who hope in the LORD
will inherit the land.” Psalm 37
I don’t know that this line sounds right out here in farm country.
My father-in-law was what used to be called a “small farmer,” in the days when there was such a thing. My wife grew up on a farm like Old McDonalds—little of this, little of that.
Well, I got news. Out here, those kinds of farms simply don’t exist. Farming has become agri-business, and everything has changed.
My father-in-law bought some land when he was farming, nowhere near enough for a young farmer today. But he owns the land, enough of it that my wife’s inheritance is significant. We could come heir to it, but then he might just give it away, to church or school.
But let’s say his land comes to us. Let’s say we keep it, and even though we don’t live on it, we might just drive by once in a while. We’d likely rent it out to the cousin who now farms it. Eventually however, we’d likely pass land ownership on to our children.
Now there is a possibility that our children will live in the neighborhood someday, but that certainly isn’t a given. So it’s possible that eventually the land her father bought as he slowly built his own farm will end up in the hands of absentee landlords.
That phenomenon is happening all over the rural Midwest, prompting people to ask whether so much “absentee landlordism” is going to be good for the health of communities. That question goes to the very heart of the quality of life out here on the far western edge of the cornbelt. What exactly is our future if people in faraway cities own the land we live on?
To promise, as the NIV does, that those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land sounds, in this region, like a pipe dream—and it is. Good people don’t inevitably win in the quest for land ownership. The mid-80s’ “farm crisis” made that perfectly clear. More often than not, good, hard-working people got flattened. Sorry, David—maybe that was true in old Israel, but it’s not true—nor should anyone promise it—in the rural areas of the Upper Midwest.
The KJV says, more metaphorically perhaps, that the righteous will inherit the earth. In our present context, I much prefer earth to land. If I lived in Toronto or New York or Los Angeles, I wouldn’t much care which word is used; but here, where the future of rural life is dependent upon land ownership, I much prefer “the earth.”
Earthspiritualizes richly. It suggests that those who hope in God inherit the concept of earth; they inherit the true (which is to say, spiritual) riches of this earth, not the ground itself, not the back forty, the neighbor’s thousand acres. Cold hard cash is not at issue here and neither is good black dirt.
Calvin says that what David means with this line is that those who hope in the Lord “shall live in such a manner as that the blessing of God shall follow them, even to the grave.” That blessing may well include a thousand acres, but you can’t take that promise to the bank.
It probably goes without saying that what David is promising is a far site better than the flattest, blackest land in all of Sioux County, Iowa. But out here, where land ownership is so important, it probably needs to be said.
Eventually, my wife will inherit the land. More importantly, and by grace alone, she—and her husband and our children and all of those we love, those who hope in the Lord--will inherit the earth.

Geometry assignment; May 27
After the long weekend, we went back to work today with our second coordinate transformation. We worked on reflections today, identifying the line of reflection first and then making the necessary image from the original. We went over several examples together in class before the students got started on their homework.
